Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis
Treatment for Psoriasis & Skin Diseases
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis (sore-EYE-ah-sis) is a medical condition that occurs when skin cells grow too quickly. Faulty signals in the immune system cause new skin cells to form in days rather than weeks. The body does not shed these excess skin cells, so the cells pile up on the surface of the skin and lesions form.
Psoriasis is a non-infectious, inflammatory disease of the skin. It is characterized by well-defined erythematous (reddish) plaques with large adherent silvery scales. The main abnormality in psoriasis is an increased proliferation of the skin layers due to excessive division of the cell in the basal layers of the skin. Severe itching may associate with the plaques. Dryness of the skin and silvery scaling are characteristics of this condition.
Scaling occurs when cells in the outer layer of the skin reproduce faster than normal and pile up on the skin’s surface. In many ways, psoriatic skin is similar to skin which is healing from a wound or reacting to a stimulus such as infection.
Types of Psoriasis
Plaque Psoriasis :- Plaque psoriasis is the most prevalent form of this disorder, and is characterized by raised, inflamed, scaly lesions. The scales are formed by dead skin cells, while the inflammation is a result of the increased blood supply to the areas of rapid skin cell reproduction.
· Raised and thickened patches of reddish skin, called “plaques,” which are covered by silvery-white scales.
· Plaques most often appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, chest, and lower back. However, they can appear anywhere on the body, including the genitals.
· Plaques vary in size and can appear as distinct patches or join together to cover a large area.
· In the early stages, the psoriasis may be unnoticeable. The skin may itch and/or a burning sensation may be present.
· Plaque psoriasis usually first appears as small red bumps. Bumps gradually enlarge, and scales form. While the top scales flake off easily and often, scales below the surface stick together. The small red bumps develop into plaques (reddish areas of raised and thickened skin).
· Skin discomfort. The skin is dry and may be painful. Skin can itch, burn, bleed, and crack. In severe cases, the discomfort can make it difficult to sleep and focus on everyday activities.
Pustular Psoriasis :- Pustular psoriasis is characterized by pustules ( Blisters ) on the skin. This type of Psoriasis has three distinct phases reddening of the skin, formation of pustules and Scaling of the skin. The Blisters are caused by an infection, nor are they contagious

· Can first appear as another form of psoriasis, such as plaque psoriasis, and turn into guttate psoriasis.
Inverse Psoriasis :- Inverse Psoriasis affects skin folds such as the armpits and groin. It is characterized by smooth, red inflamed lesions without any scaling which are often irritated by rubbing or sweating
· Red and inflamed plaques that only occur in skin folds — armpits, in the genital area, between the buttocks, and under the breasts.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Psoriasis
Ayurveda is the oldest complete medical system in the world that goes back to over 5000 years in to the history of Vedic civilization of India.
The purpose of Ayurveda is to bring the body forces into harmony so that they promote physical, emotional and spiritual growth.
Such an approach has proven effective over the centuries and as a result, many of Ayurvedic healing regimes have been widely accepted by the modern world. In Ayurveda, diseases are treated with herbo-mineral medicines naturally available on earth indicating that nature has a remedy for most of the diseases that threatens to the living beings
According to Ayurveda, Psoriasis (Sidhma Kushtam) occurs due to vitiation of Vata and Kapha doshas. The reasons are Incompatible Food, Accumulation of Toxins etc. considered as the (Two of the basic energies/humors, which maintains our body equilibrium) Accumulation of low potency poisons (Dooshi vishas), are the basic pathological changes taking place in the system. Irregular food habits, consumption of foodstuffs that cannot be eaten together (Eg: dairy products with fish), excessive intake of yogurt, black gram, seafood, sour and salted items etc can activate the pathogenesis. Alcohol and tobacco consumption will act as a catalyst here. Ayurveda do emphasize on the effect of stress in the pathogenesis of Psoriasis.

Our skin is made up of connective tissues. These tissues give our skin strength and elasticity. When we are young and healthy the skin is smooth, elastic and supple. This is the effect of strong connective fibres. As we age those fibres’ are continually subjected to free-radical attack which breaks them down. As a result, connective tissues become hardened and lose both elasticity and strength. The skin loses its ability to hold itself together and begins to sag and become wrinkled. Once young, soft and smooth the skin turns dry and leathery.
Coming to the treatment aspects of Psoriasis according to Ayurveda, it aims at the detoxification of the body or elimination of toxins from the body fluids. It is achieved by "Panchakarma" treatments.
Current schedule, comprising various treatment aspects of Ayurveda is aiming at a better control of Psoriasis. This includes internal and external medications purely of plant origin. Rough out line of this schedule is as follows. (i) Consumption of medicated ghee, considering the Dosha type of the Psoriasis and the person, for 7 to 10 days. (ii) Detoxifying, by inducing vomiting (Vamana) and purgation (Virechana). This is followed by medicated buttermilk dripping overhead (Thakradhara) and pasting the entire body with a paste of medicines and mud. (iii) Vasthies (medicated enemas) are being done for 8-10 days and internal medicines like herbal concoctions; medicated ghee has to be consumed for at least 60 days. Note:
Psoriasis Diet
A strict diet regime has to be followed during the entire treatment period and it is better to continue as vegetarian. Yogurt, black gram, chillies and salted thing have to be restricted. It is better to avoid refrigerated/chilled foods. Psoriatic must keep a state of mental calmness.
